Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC)

The Singapore National Eye Centre is Singapore's designated national eye centre within the public healthcare network, providing specialist eye care to 70 percent of patients in the public sector. The eye specialists at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) perform over 8000 cataract surgeries a year. Research into various retinal conditions is part of the core activities of the Service. Glaucoma Consultants manage over 17,000 glaucoma attendances annually.

Major research projects include myopia, diabetic retinopathy, photodynamic therapy, polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy and retinitis pigmentosa. Common surgical procedures done at SNEC include:

  • Trabeculectomies with Mitomycin C.
  • Combined Phaco-Trabeculectomies with Antimetabolites.
  • Seton implants eg Molteno, Baerveldt and Admed implants.
  • Trans Scleral Cyclo Photocoagulation.
  • Goniotomies and Trabeculotomies for pediatric glaucomas.

The Singapore National Eye Centre opened the world’s first non-surgical, interactive computer-aided NeuroVisionTM treatment centre in Singapore. The innovative, groundbreaking technology offers treatment for adults with amblyopia (‘lazy’ eye) which has been considered untreatable until now as well as individuals with low degrees of myopia (short-sightedness).

The Corneal and External Eye Disease Clinics are tertiary referral-based subspecialty clinics held in the SNEC to evaluate and treat a wide variety of blinding corneal disorders for clinical, applied and basic research in ophthalmology and the visual sciences in collaboration with academic, governmental, commercial, pharmaceutical and private institutes at a global level including:

  • Anterior segment and external eye diseases,
  • Corneal and ocular surface transplantation,
  • Neuro-Ophthalmology Service,
  • Ocular Inflammation and Immunology Service,
  • Oculoplastic/ Aesthetic Eyeplastic, Refractive Surgery Service,
  • Diabetic Retinopathy Service,
  • Low Vision Clinic and Support,
  • Vitreo Retinal Services etc.

The international medical community has recognized their efforts and contributions to the field. At the most recent international eye surgery scientific meeting (the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Annual Meeting) which was held in Washington DC, SNEC surgical team won the First Place Film Award under the "New Techniques" Category, for the OOKP procedure, which has never been performed in the US. This is the first time Singapore surgeons have won the first place award at this prestigious meeting which is one of the largest clinical ophthalmology meetings in the world.

In the field of new discovery, SNEC and its sister body, SERI (Singapore Eye Research Institute) scientists made history in finding the gene that is linked to Congenital Hereditary Endothelial Dystrophy (CHED) that makes it possible to identify and treat the disease early.
