St Thomas Boys Choir, Leipzig - Johann Sebastian Bach's legacy

The world-famous boys choir of the St Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany, one of Europe’s oldest cultural entities and one of the oldest choirs in the world, will be thrilling audiences in Singapore in their debut here.

With its almost 800 years of history the Saint Thomas Boys Choir is the oldest cultural institution in Leipzig and it is considered to be one of the fig 3: St Thomas Boys Choir, Leipzigleading ensembles in the German choral tradition. Famous choirmasters such as Johann Sebastian Bach have had a lasting impact on the choir's work and performance and helped it to gain world-wide renown. The heart of the choir’s musical work is the sacred music in the services and motets in St Thomas ' Church. Oratorios, passions and masses by Bach can also be enjoyed regularly and attract more thousands of auditors every week. The repertoire of the choir ranges from the Gregorian until the modern times. The choir’s numerous other engagements also include concert tours at home and abroad, recordings and appearances on radio and television, all of which provide ample opportunities for the choristers to demonstrate their versatility and artistic excellence.

The choir is one of the foremost interpreters of the legacy of its famed choirmaster, composer Johann Sebastian Bach – who during his 27 year tenure there composed his most important works – and who built it into an institution of artistic excellence.

While their repertoire ranges from Gregorian to modern music, the heart of the choir’s musical work are motets and Bach cantatas. Oratorios, passions and masses by Bach attract audiences of thousands to their weekly concerts, while concerts at home and since 1920, every major music-centre abroad, showcase the choristers’ versatility.

In Singapore, the 55-member-strong choir accompanied by an organist will perform the works of Bach as well as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, composer and conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in his time, on the occasion of the bicentennial of the latter’s birth.
