Empire of Nature, The William Farquhar Collection of Natural History Drawings donated by GK Goh.

An Exhibition of William Farquhar’s Collection of Natural History Drawings in Celebration of the National Museum’s 120th Anniversary.THE FARQUHAR COLLECTION

Enter the world of nature, history and art through this unique collection of natural history drawings.

Donated by Mr G.K. Goh in 1996, the Farquhar Collection of Natural History Drawings is prized as one of the 11 national treasures of the Museum. The painting of these drawings was commissioned by William Farquhar (1774-1839), the first Resident and Commandant of Singapore during his stay in Melaka. The Farquhar Collection is one of the earliest and most comprehensive records of the flora and fauna of the region. The paintings are an interesting combination of a high standard of scientific detail and accuracy, and traditional Chinese painting aesthetics.

The entire collection of 477 paintings will be displayed for the first time as part of the National Museum’s 120th Anniversary celebrations.

At 120 years old, the National Museum of Singapore is Singapore’s oldest museum with the youngest and most innovative soul. Designed to be the people’s museum, it prides itself on introducing varied and cutting-edge ways of presenting history to redefine conventional museum experience.

More than just a space for exhibitions and artefacts, the National Museum also distinguishes itself through its challenging and vibrant festivals which seek to unleash new creative possibilities in culture and heritage.
