Navies must have a toolbox of platforms, sensors and weapon which are employed together in a coherent manner if they are to rapidly locate and destroy, or where necessary, avoid a modern submarine threat. This is particularly important in this region or the world where there has been a proliferation of modern submarines, including nuclear powered and air independent propulsion types.
Course Objective:
- Overview to of the roles and functions of submarines in naval warfare from acoustics perspective
- Understanding of submarine operational and tactical characteristics
- Appreciating submarine platform and mission systems
- Having an in-depth discussion on passive and active theory and sonar system in an ASW context
- Differentiating noises effects from the enemy, own sub and marine mammals
- Understanding the physics of sound propagationunderwater acoustics to enhance the quality of your decision in detecting, classifying and localizing submarines
- Understanding the effect the environment has on underwater acoustics
- Enhancing understanding on sonar signal processing for undersea submarine detection, classification and localisation
- Increasing knowledge in active sonar systems and its detection of sub and light weight torpedoes underseaunderwater communications
- Increasing knowledge on torpedo sonars and acoustic countermeasures
- Deciding the best type of sonars used in ASW applications Recognizing the advantages and disadvantage of each acoustic system to determine how best to employ multiple system to combat an undersea threat.
